Where chocking sits in the pump skill

“Step 1: Position the apparatus in a safe positon, and immobilize it by setting the parking brake and chocking the wheels.” The pump skill chocks with the parking brake, before the pump is engaged; the printed evolution sheet carries it out of the cab at step 6.

The card’s CALCULATE PDP / SET PDP steps have no counterpart on this evolution — the discharge pressure here comes off the Pro/Pak’s own flow chart at step 10, not from a pump-discharge calculation.

What the manual rates the Pro/Pak at

Recommended rated flow: 12 gpm at 100 psi. Minimum operating condition: 7 gpm at 40 psi.

Those are the only two flow/pressure points the manual publishes. The sheet’s third point — 8 gpm at 50 psi — does not appear in the manual, and at the manual’s 40 psi minimum the manual says 7 gpm, not 8.

The printed figures are reproduced exactly; the italic line is the engine evolution card’s own foam step. Neither set matches the OFD Hydraulic Manual, which meters 1–3% on hydrocarbons and 3–6% on polar solvents and alcohols — see How long the Pro/Pak lasts for the table to work from. How long the Pro/Pak lasts

The table to work from

Orem’s own hydraulic standard prints the duration table at whole percentages, on the same 12 gpm basis and the same 2½ gallons of concentrate:

Those percentages are the ones the same section authorises for the Pro/Pak: 1% and 3% AFFF on flammable liquids that do not contain alcohol, 3% and 6% Alcohol Resistant AFFF on flammable liquids containing polar solvents.

Why the printed sheet’s percentages are not the ones to dial

Out-of-cab step 11 prints 0.1% / 0.3% / 0.5% / 1%. The hydraulic standard prints 1% / 3% / 6%. The two agree at exactly one point — 1% = 21 minutes — which is what shows they are the same calculation at a shifted decimal. The metering valve settings the standard gives are whole percentages (1–3% on hydrocarbons, 3–6% on polars and alcohols), so the tenths-of-a-percent rows have no setting to dial. Work from the 1 / 3 / 6 table.

And the Pro/Pak on the rig is carried half full

The apparatus check is explicit: “Pro/Pak is half full with AFFF foam.” The table above is written for 2½ gallons, so the real duration on the rig is roughly half of it — on the order of 10 minutes at 1%, 3½ at 3%, under 2 at 6%.

Carry both numbers: the full-charge table is what the drill and the manual are written to, the halved figure is what you actually have when you pull it off the rig.

What concentrate goes in it
“Pro/pak can be used with 1% and 3% AFFF Class B concentrates on flammable liquids that do not contain alcohol. It can be used with 3% and 6% Alcohol Resistant AFFF Class B concentrates on flammable liquids containing polar solvents.”

Where the Pro/Pak stops being the right tool

“Pro/pak should not be used on ignited Class B fuels with an area greater than 120 square feet. It should not be used on burning Polar Solvents with an area greater than 60 square feet.”

Past those areas the Pro/Pak is out of its envelope. The only other foam appliance the manual covers is the in-line eductor, below; the concentrate calculation decides whether there is enough foam on scene at all.

How much concentrate the fire needs

The calculation

Area × Critical Application Rate × Eduction Rate × 15 minutes = amount of foam concentrate needed.

  • Area — square footage; length × width. Circle: 3.14 × r².
  • Critical Application Rate — minimum flow of finished foam per square foot. Hydrocarbon fuels 0.1 gpm/sqft; polar solvents and alcohols 0.2 gpm/sqft.
  • Eduction Rate — minimum metering valve settings. Hydrocarbons 1–3%; polars and alcohols 3–6%.
  • 15 minutes — the NFPA 11 standard for the amount of concentrate to have on hand to operate for 15 minutes.

The short way to the same number

Hydrocarbons: Area ÷ 20. Polar solvents / alcohols: Area ÷ 5.

The manual’s own worked example — a 10′ × 10′ (100 sqft) gasoline spill: 100 × 0.1 gpm/sqft × 0.03 × 15 = 4.5 gallons of concentrate. By the short method, 100 ÷ 20 = 5 gallons.

What you have on hand sets the size of fire you can take

“Remember, we are limited by how much foam we have on hand and how fast we can get more. It may be that if we only have 20 gallons (4 pails) we are limited to a 60′ x 60′ hydrocarbon or 30′ x 30′ polar solvent spill.”

Aeration — getting more finished foam out of the same concentrate

OFD has the option to use the TFT foam jet nozzle attachment for foam expansion, which increases the expansion ratio of Class B foam from 4:1 to 8:1.

If the job outgrows the Pro/Pak — in-line eductors

Rating, matching, and back pressure
  • OFD in-line eductors are rated at 95 gpm. The eductor and the nozzle must have matching flow rates for the concentrate to “pick-up.”
  • Eductors are designed to achieve rated flow with an inlet pressure of 200 psi.
  • Do not exceed 70% back pressure beyond the eductor.

The manual’s worked example: 70% of 200 psi is 140 psi; minus 100 psi of nozzle pressure leaves 40 psi to spend on everything past the eductor. By the hand method, a 1¾″ line flowing 95 gpm loses 12 psi per 100′, so 300′ costs 36 psi — inside the 40. Elevation gain or loss and any appliance friction loss come out of the same 40 psi.

This evolution runs on tank water. Work the pump.

Emergency pump operations — the full sequence

READING THE PRINTED SHEET

  • The out-of-cab column is headed “Out-Of-Cab Operations: Draft” — the only evolution in the book carrying that qualifier. No step in 2.0 directs a drafting operation; the sequence is tank-to-pump throughout.
  • The setup block is three lines only. Unlike 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 it carries no drill-record line and no “make sure all in-cab and out-of-cab operations are complete.”
  • 2.0 carries no manual-discharge-relief-valve remark and no relief-valve step, unlike Evolution 1.1.
  • No role is named anywhere on the 2.0 page — no step reads “Engineer will…”. These are the candidate operator’s actions by the book’s own frame.
